It all started on the trail...

Winding trails, breathtaking views, sunrises on the mountainside. Those are the things that inspired Tailwind Nutrition founder Jeff Vierling to get out there, and he wasn't about to let bad nutrition get in the way.

The Tailwind adventure started with the head over a trash can

It all started when my buddy Art suggested we pick an event and train for it. I had never raced before and chose the Leadville 100 MTB. Go big or go home, right? I finished that first Leadville 100 and headed straight for the garbage, throwing up the granola that had been a burden to me all day. Tired of the nutritional issues that drained the blood, sweat, and tears of my workout, I wanted to find foods that spared my GI system, were easy to use, tasted great, and would fuel me to the finish - minus breakfast, part two .

Rooted in science and tested on the trails

I started devouring everything I could find about sports nutrition and how the body processes fuel (you can read more about the science behind Tailwind here ). I quickly realized that most products contained ingredients that were difficult to digest, so I started experimenting with batches of powder formulated to suit the way the body uses up fuel. After a lot of tweaking and testing on the trails here in Durango, along with my wife, Jenny, and the local Thursday Bike n' Beer group, Tailwind was born. A sports drink that's gentle on the stomach, maintains constant energy levels, balances electrolytes and hydration, and tastes great even on a long, hot day. A few years later, I teamed up with my old friend Art (now our R&D director!) who happens to be an endurance athlete and physician to create our Recovery Mix.

Tailwind Nutrition's mission has been at the forefront of what we do since an email came in from Lisa. She had retired from seven endurance mountain bike races due to stomach problems. She wrote that she completed the Shenandoah Mountain 100 with Tailwind without any problems. She burst into tears at the finish, realizing what she had accomplished and no longer fearing it would never work out.
